This springtime music festival brings the world's best orchestras to Prague's State Opera House. Honouring Bedrich Smetana, father of Czech music, it opens on the anniversary of his death with a traditional performance of his orchestral cycle, My Country.
The festival opening is preceded by a ceremony at Smetana's grave in Vysehrad and the procession to the Smetana Hall.
Once the prerogative of solely Czech orchestras, recently visiting orchestras have also been invited.
In 2009 Christoph von Dohnányi brought his NDR Symphony Orchestra for two concerts and Philippe Herreweghe celebrated Mendelssohn with his Orchestre des Champs-Elysées. Vocalists visiting included Juan Diego Flórez, Susan Graham and Thomas Hampson and instrumentalists included a clutch of great violinists, including Shlomo Mintz, Leonidas Kavakos and Anne-Sophie Mutter. Jordi Saval also played the solo viola da gamba at the festival.
Operas included Dvorák's Rusalka as well as Eugene Onegin, Rinaldo, La bohème, Smetana's The Bartered Bride, Don Giovanni and Otello.
Please see the Prague Spring International Music Festival website for details of the forthcoming festival.
