Florida Sports Park welcomes 70 fearless racers for its tri-annual Swamp Buggy Races, to challenge the world famous "Sippy Hole". Swamp Buggys were born out of necessity, there being no other effective way to penetrate the vast, boggy mire known as Collier county.
The first Swamp Buggy Races started to take place around 1943, featuring a handful of local Floridian hunters racing only for first place. However, the competitive nature of these folk meant increasing numbers got involved, and by the late 1940s, 35 or so racers would gather before hunting season to race for a prize - usually a new shotgun donated by local merchants.
Today, contestants compete with equal fervour and the Swamp Buggy Races have grown to incorporate traditions such as the Swamp Buggy Queen Pageant (the Queen is ceremoniously dunked in slimy mud after the race).
