Cotopaxi, located close to Latacunga, is Ecuador's most popular national park. At 5897 metres, snow-capped Cotopaxi is the highest active volcano in the world and the park's main attraction. There are excellent hiking, climbing and mountain biking opportunities, and visitor facilities include cabins, hiking trails and a campsite.
Temperatures vary between freezing and 15°C, so take some warm clothes. Besides the Cotopaxi Volcano, Rumiñahui (4712 metres) and Morurco (4840 metres) offer alternative hiking options.
The park is also home to a variety of wildlife including condors, deer, bears, foxes, paramo wolves, Andean gulls and hummingbirds.
