Sardinia is bathed by some of the cleanest water in the Mediterranean. Located just south of Corsica and 300km off the east coast of Italy, the island is perfect for family beach holidays and romancing couples.
With gorgeous, gently-shelving beaches and an interior dotted with prickly pear, wild myrtle bushes and pine trees, Sardinia also boasts some of the best food in Italy.
Expect seafood risottos washed down with a Nuragus white wine; roast suckling pig (a fiesta dish) with red Carignano and pasta sauces flavoured with hard Pecorino cheese.
The better-known coasts are Costa Rei (south) and Costa Smeralda (north) while hidden stretches of largely deserted coastline include Cala Gonone on the east coast and Costa Verde (aka the 'Silent Coast') to the west.
Cultural highlights are Alghero's Catalan Gothic cathedral and Cagliari's Roman Amphitheatre.
With the airports of Alghero and Cagliari welcoming international flights to opposite ends of the islands, Sardinia is easily accessible. Come in summer for sizzling temperatures and clear blue skies (Jun-Sep 28°C) and in winter for mild weather (15°C).
