Campania is sandwiched between Lazio to the north and Calabria to the south located on the south-west coast of Italy. Better known for Naples, and the dramatic Amalfi Coast, Campania gave the world Buffalo mozzarella, pizza, spaghetti and Sophia Loren!
Follow Grand Tourists by exploring the romantic city of Naples before driving south along the hair-raising coastal road through Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi. Or see it all by boat along with the islands of Ischia and Capri.
A landscape of citrus orchards and bougainvillea, the plunging coastline hides tiny fishing villages hugging hidden coves. The food is stupendous! Baked, stuffed artichokes (Carciofi ripeni all napoletana), mouth-watering pizza and dried figs on sticks (sproccolati) await your tastebuds, washed down with Limoncello, a local digestif made from lemons.
Cultural highlights are the Roman ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum in the shadow of Vesuvius and the Royal Palace of Caserta, east of Naples. Few venture south of Salerno - but you should - to enjoy the beaches around Palinuro and the unforgettable Ancient Greek temples at Paestum.
Summers are hot (max temp 35°C), winters mild.
