North Rhine Westphalia

Düsseldorf straddles the river Rhine, just 20 minutes by train from Cologne. One of Germany's most stylish and fun-loving cities, it is a media and fashion capital, as well as one of the swankiest shopping destinations in the country.

Cologne, just upriver, offers a wealth of cultural activities, a dynamic nightlife and Europe's greatest collection of Romanesque churches. Both cities are particularly proud of their home-brewed beers, which are served in traditional taverns in the Altstadt (old town).

The dense transportation network connects both cities to the varied towns of the region, from Oberhausen with its Arena for big pop concerts to Bonn and Essen, with their important museums.
