Local knowledge

Zagreb throbs with life as most capitals do, but it has retained much of its Old World graciousness. Only five minutes walk from the bustle of main Jelacic Square and hidden away is Tkalciceva Street. It's chocolate box houses, flower pots and baskets, pavement cafes with squeaky wicker chairs serving delicious continental coffee and croissants line up the street reflecting the relaxed spirit of old Zagreb. Adding to the atmosphere of bygone age is the statue of a local popular novelist and first woman journalist, Maria Juric Zagorka, whose romantic books were set in 18th century Zagreb.

Fo…

Sightseeing

The city centre lies in two parts: Gornji Grad (Upper Town) and Donji Grad (Lower Town) which meet at Trg Bana Jelačića, the main square. Picturesque Gornji Grad is made up of higgledy-piggledy cobbled streets and buildings dating from medieval times up to the 19th century, including the katedrala (cathedral), Crkva Svetog Marka (St Marks’ Church), the Sabor (croatian parliament), the Meštrović Atelier and Dolac (the open-air market). In contrast, Donji Grad follows a geometrical grid-plan, with…
