Local knowledge

It might be thousands of kilometres from the sea, but I love Munich because of its beaches. Head for the Wittelsbacher Bridge, where kilometres of grass and pebble beaches line the banks of the River Isar. In summer the beaches are packed with sun-seekers (be warned - in some areas swimming costumes are optional!), and as evening falls locals grill Würschtl on the barbeque and enjoy cold beer for which Munich is righly famous.

Haidhausen offers a more alternative scene. The city has a range of bars and clubs to suit mo…

Sightseeing

Marienplatz, where the main pedestrianised streets converge, is the undisputed centre of the city, and the location of the impressive town hall, the Neues Rathaus. Many of the city's main attractions are in the immediate vicinity, so sightseeing can easily be done on foot or by hopping on and off trams. Be sure to see the Stadtmuseum just south of Marienplatz, on the fringe of Munich's famous market, the Viktualienmarkt.Nearby are some of the city's most impressive churches, including the cathed…
