Local knowledge

There are two reasons why I love Lisbon: the shopping and the fantastic nightlife. The best shops are in the Baixa and the Chiado districts but my favourite is the Centro Comercial do Colombo. Your evening of fun should start with a visit to the restaurants of Bairro Alto. From there head out to the trendy bars and nightclubs in the Docas area - remember nothing happens before 11pm, and no-one goes home before 4am.

The minimum age for purchasing alcohol is 16 years.Much of the action has moved on to the D…

Sightseeing

Getting around Lisbon is all part of the fun, with a city centre that is easily navigable on foot for reasonably fit visitors. When the gradients become too much, the rapidly improving metro system is on hand and there is also the bus network, as well as the enjoyable array of clanking trams, bobbing ferries, crawling funiculars and lofty elevadors. The elevadors and funiculars are a good place for visitors to start exploring the city, as they offer expansive views. Alternatively, São Jorge Caste…
