Local knowledge

As one of the many emerging jewels of Eastern Europe, Budapest is right there at the top. From the amazing parliament building along the Danube to the beautiful views from the Fisherman's bastion (with old ladies selling lace and embroidery as you climb the hill), this is a must-visit destination. One of the main things that stand out are the fabulous Turkish baths. Located at major hotels - most famous one being Gallert; these are places to relax and de-stress in full-on water surroundings. Being single sex, an interesting experience in itself, each bath has a slightly different water temperature and full of mineral content to work wonders with your body. There are also plunge pools for the daredevils out there. Overall Budapest is a city I would thoroughly recommend with great views along the river to match.

Borozós are cheap wine cellars, where it is rare to see women, especially unaccompanied. Sörözős are beer houses that will also serve good and moderately priced food. The minimum drinking …

Sightseeing

The Chain Bridge (Széchenyi lánchíd) is the central point of Budapest. From here, hilly Buda is to the west and the plains of commercial Pest are to the east. A steep climb in the Sikló, the 19th-century funicular, leads to Buda’s Castle Hill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where many attractions are clustered. Trinity Square is at the heart of the district and usually thronging with tourists. Nearby is the mosaic-roofed Matthias Church, fronted by King Stephen’s statue and the fairytale Fisherm…
