Local knowledge

For those seeking the local colour of old Athens head for Plaka, the district of the gods, at the foot of the sacred rock of the Acropolis. Here you can have your first taste of Greek coffee, or a 'Frappe' - the lifeblood of modern Greeks - in one of the many coffee shops. Then take a stroll to Anafiotika, the cluster of small houses built on the slopes of the Acropolis above the Plaka.Wander around the small streets and continue to your right (facing the Acropolis) - the road that overlooks the city and leads to the entrance of Greece's most famous archaeological site and historic landmark. All this walking should set you up for lunch - try a Souvlaki sandwich for a local taste. Night owls should head for Psiri, home of the famous bouzoukia clubs. Dance on the tables and crash as many plates you want - you have to pay for them anyway!

Sightseeing

Modern Athens is divided into districts but Plateía Síndagmatos (Syntagma or Constitution Square) is the epicentre of the city - almost everything worth seeing in Athens is within half an hour’s walk of here.Other useful landmarks are the unavoidable Akrópoli (Acropolis) and Lykavittós Hill. The Pláka covers the area below the Acropolis, to the east of the Agorá. Despite being heavily commercialised, this is the most pleasant part of the city to explore on foot. Narrow winding streets are lined …
